Healthy lifestyle, fun and fellowship were the themes of the first annual Tea Party and Fashion Show hosted by the Rotary Club of Princes Town at the Hilton Trinidad and Conference Centre. In keeping with Rotary International focus on Diabetes, the event recognized World Diabetes Day on November 14th 2010.

Comedienne Nikki Crosby brought smiles to all as they enjoyed tea with fabulous fashions by Preview and Footloose BoutiquesJudy’s Boutique and the designers Heather Jones and Prem. Several companies donated hampers and gift baskets, that were distributed as prizes to those in attendance. Patrons were also able to sample sugar-free goodies and learn about new pharmaceutical products for diabetics from the many medical booths at the venue.

The Feature Speaker, The Honourable Minister of Health, Mrs. Therese Baptiste-Cornelis reminded everyone about the increasing number of Diabetes cases in Trinidad and Tobago and the need to adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle. Also gracing us with her presence was former first lady Mrs Zalahar Hassanali who was the first patron for the children with diabetes. Joining the Minister in supporting the Club’s focus on Diabetes was Honorary member of the Club, cricket captain Darren Ganga who took to the catwalk along with his younger brother Sherwin and fellow cricketers: Lendel Simmons and Riyad Emrith.

Part of the proceeds from the evening would go to Children with Diabetes, some of whom were present and eloquently shared their experiences with a placard presentation.

There will also be the implementation of the Diabetes Education, Awareness and Prevention Programme in schools and medical outreach projects.

The Rotary Club of Princes Town is encouraged by the tremendous support received from this event and would be continuing the focus on Diabetes in their many Medical Outreach projects and the Diabetes Awareness, Education and Prevention programme planned for youths.
