The celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr by the Rotary Club of Princes Town was held at the picturesque Usine Ste. Madeleine Sports Club on Wednesday September 15, 2010.

The evening air was filled with the musical voices of Partners in Rotary who serenaded the audience with quaseedas or Islamic songs.  Specially invited devotional singers, Haroon Ali and Hazra Mohammed added to the repertoire of enchanting melodies performed for the pleasure of the Rotarians and guests present.

Our feature speaker, Mr. Nizamah Khan, the principal of the Princes Town ASJA Primary School enlightened the audience about the key elements of Islam and the practical aspects of Islam in everyday life.  He expounded on the five pillars of Islam which are faith, fasting, prayer, charity and the pilgrimage to Mecca.  He emphasized that fasting in Islam is not only physical but moral and spiritual as well and served to make each muslim a better person.

The programme also featured delightful performances by children of Rotarians. Kyle and Selena Ali recited verses of the holy Qur’an with the translation and Nabeel Mohammed sang an Islamic poem.

The evening culminated with a sumptuous dinner of traditional dishes including curried goat, chicken, samosas, pumpkin, rice, curried channa and potato, roti and Indian delicacies such as saheena and pholourie.

Dessert was the quintessential Eid favourite, sawine, a combination of vermicelli, milk and spices which was topped off with raisins, almonds and cherries. Other traditional Indian sweets such as barfi, gulabjamoon, kurma and halwa also complemented the dessert buffet.
