CELEBRATING DIVALI WITH THE RESIDENTS OF GLUD ROAD TABLELAND

On Saturday 22nd October 2016 the Club as part of its ongoing efforts to assist communities under its jurisdiction, partnered with the Glud Road Community, Tableland to celebrate the occasion of Divali.

The celebrations started off with the conduct of prayers and lighting of deeyas at 6:00 p.m. At the start of the programme President Debbie Roopchand expressed her delight at being in her hometown of Tableland and brought Divali greetings behalf of the Club.

The evening’s entertainment included the performance of religious songs with live instrumental accompaniment. A group of young female dancers executed a beautiful dance segment in the open air on the roadway and the residents to the delight of all attendees performed an interesting play made up on the spot, which focused on the use of alcohol and domestic violence. Rotarians also assisted in the selection of the Community's Divali Queen little Priya and her crowning was one of the highlights of the evening.

The Club who had given the Community a financial contribution of $2,000.00 towards the staging of the event, took the opportunity to treat over 45 children of the community with gifts and treat bags and distributed 10 Divali hampers to residents.

Community activist Deochan Ragoonanan who was instrumental in the staging of the event reported that since the Club’s hosting of a Divali programme with the Community 4 years ago, they had not celebrated Divali in this manner and it was as a result of the Club’s generosity this year they were able to do so again.

The Club sincerely thanks its Service Projects Director Vilma Bellamy for her successful coordination and execution of this project and all the Rotarians who attended and lent their support.
