The Rotary Club of Princes Town held its second annual Tea Party and Fashion Event in Port of Spain at the  Hilton Conference Centre on Sunday November 20th.

The event was held to generate  funds towards the Club’s work with Diabetes awareness, education and prevention. This year the Club also focused on Rotary’s ongoing campaign to eradicate Polio.    The  Feature Speaker, The Minister of Health, The Honorable Dr. Fuad Khan  complimented the Club for its initiative in taking the Diabetes prevention  message to primary schools with their interactive talks, booklets and quizzes  and also in their medical outreach programs where blood testing and awareness  information are taken to remote rural villages.

In his address, the Minister  indicated his Ministry’s intention to introduce healthy food options to  children as the numbers of diabetes cases in the country increases along with  the number of amputations from diabetes. Minister Khan also gave his commitment  on behalf of the Ministry of Health to partner with the Rotary Club of Princes Town in the fight against diabetes.

President Bashir Mohammed invited the corporate and private sectors to partner with NGO’s like Rotary to curb the increase of juvenile diabetes by financially sponsoring education programs in community centers and schools geared towards healthy eating habits.  Sponsorship of competitions such as cricket, football, basketball, swimming etc. promoting physical fitness, team building, discipline, self esteem will also benefit the entire community in the long run when their employees are healthier, more alert on the job and costs incurred on company health packages will be reduced.

Rotary District Governor Lara Quentrall-Thomas reminded patrons that while it was an evening of fun, friendship and fashion; they were actually supporting the effort to fight Diabetes in our country and helping Rotary’s ongoing campaign to rid the world of Polio.

MC for the evening, Nikki Crosby was as thrilled as the ladies in the audience to see Former Cricket Captain Darren Ganga, his brother Sherwin, hair stylist Bally and attorney Kevin Ratiram who is also a Past President of the Rotary Club of Penal, strut on the Catwalk alongside models from the House of Jacqui.

The theme was elegance and the fashion lineup certainly portrayed that with outstanding designs from local designers Heather Jones, Zadd and Eastman and Durante. Fashion boutiques, Judy’s Bridal and Formal, Ria’s, Bocherer, Diva’s and Radical Designs added to the show making it, according to some of the patrons, one of the best fashion shows of the year.
